Jeste li vas dvoje prijatelji?

Jeste li oboje pravi Mac Geekovi?

Naravno. Danas ako niste makar malo geek, ne možete funkcionirat u društvu. U devedesetim godinama nazirala se budućnost geek kulture, i upravo tad smo odlučili napraviti ovakvu web stranicu na kojoj ćemo veličati i pratiti put Geekova od neuglednih ljudi do društvenih vođa!

Nitrozac je stvarno jako talentirana umjetnica. Kakvo školovanje je prošla?

Hvala.

Mi u Kanadi smo tek nedavno dobili službenu prodaju iPhone-a. Kad napokon dođu u Hrvatsku svi osjećaji isčekivanja i žaljenja nestat će u jednom trenu i bit će zamijenjeni s radošću. Ouch! 😉

As I promised, I will publish this interview in English language as weel. So let’s meet Nitrozac and Snaggy, interesting Geek artists from Canada:

First can you tell us about geekculture.com portal. When did you start with this project, are you two the only ones who are editing and adding content, or do you have more co-authors?

We started geekculture.com over 10 years ago. We are the primary ones editing and adding content, although we do have a couple of other people who add things from time to time. And of course we have hundreds of people adding their thoughts and posts in our Forums.

Are you two freinds?

Yes, we are friends and more than friends, and have been in a relationship with each since we met in art school.

Are both of you Mac Geeks? It’s obvious that you prefer Macs, but do you use other operating systems as well?

For day to day work on creating content, we are Mac Geeks. We both use 17″ PowerBooks to create the comics, write and illustrate, and to post content. For running our website though, our server is powered by Linux. We do have a Dell computer around here somewhere, but it hasn’t been booted in probably five years… we just don’t have the need to run Windows.

From the design of your site I can see that you are fans of Retro-futurism as a style and way of expression. Am I right?

We’ve always been fans of 1950’s and 1960’s design and science fiction, and love incorporating it into our own design and comics when we can. I’m still hoping to get a flying car soon too. 🙂

Do you think that being a Geek today is more chic than it was in the eighties?

Oh absolutely. Today, if you are not at least some part geek, you can’t function in society. In the 1990’s we could see that the future of geeks was a bright one, and that was why we started Geek Culture, to celebrate and chronicle their journey from outcasts into leaders of society.

Nitrozac is really great and talented artist. Didi she go to Art academy or some similar school?

Thank you! She attended one of Canada’s best art schools, The Ontario College of Art in Toronto. (I also attended OCA, that is where they met. We both studied electronic arts.)

Nitrozac: “When I was a child, I always wanted to be a cartoonist, and drew lots of character and developed ideas. As I got older, I put aside those dreams in pursuit of other careers such as graphic design, art, and photography. So finding myself here today is actually a pleasant surprise! The truth is, we not only create comics, we also sell propeller beanies, design merchandise, pack and ship orders, write articles, do freelance illustrations, and sell advertising for a living. 🙂 “

At your site we found the link to the auction where Nitrozacs paintings can be purchased. Do you ship them internationally?

Yes, we will ship them almost everywhere. In fact many of the buyers of her art have been from International locations. We’ve shipped to Japan, Germany, the UK, and Australia!

Can we say that Pop art scene is still alive. Do you think that today’s art has gone too much to non-figural and abstract ways?

I think there’s lots of room under the Art Umbrella for all kinds of things, from abstract, to more traditional works. And of course the emergence of the Internet has opened even more avenues for artists.

Nitrozac: “Judging from the success of the Nitrozac Paintings auctions, I would say that the public does appreciate Pop Art. I think pop art is easy to relate to and has a sense of humour to it, that I like.

I think that today’s art is divided into two areas; one is the high-end, multimedia, sculptural work that has complex intellectual messages, and the other kind of art is made by local not-famous artists creating work that is appealing to the average person, usually landscapes, still lives, figures and portraits. To go to a contemporary art show in the big museums is more of an entertainment experience, sort of like going to a movie, and you engage in the story that the artists is trying to tell you. Sometimes you can see this type of art and have a great experience and learn something in the process. You can also go to a local art show and enjoy looking at beautiful landscapes and get lots of meaning from that work.  I guess it’s a matter of taste. My taste leans towards the local type of art rather than the high-end contemporary multi-media art. I like art that doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Your comics are sometimes very sarcastic, but at the same time they have some interesting messages. I could say it’s a unique style. What’s the main inspiration for them?

We live in a rural area of Canada, removed from the heart of the tech industry but we are still involved in it, so I think that gives us a bit of perspective. It’s said that Canadian comedians often do well in the USA for the same reasons… they’ve observed the country and culture from a short distance away, and are able to recognize things that others are too close to see.

We’re mainly inspired by our own day-to-day existence with technology and the experiences that brings, both good and bad. We also find inspiration in web-based social interactions, such as Twitter, and from the people on our Forums. And of course we love to comment on the latest tech news or happenings. It’s very satisfying being able to create editorial comics for the tech industry and upload them the day that the news happens. Although we are often accused of being cheerleaders of certains technologies, in particular Apple’s, we are actually more often quite critical of them, for instance, in one of our recent comics, the App Store Approval Flow Chart. http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/1151.html Technology companies have a lot of power in the world today, and they tend to take themselves far too seriously, so we don’t mind humanizing them a little. 🙂

Do you have anything to say to fellow Mac geeks in Croatia who are desperately waiting for final official iPhone availability?

We feel your pain! We live in Canada, where it only recently became officially available. Once you do finally get iPhones in Croatia, that intense longing and sadness you are feeling now will be replaced by immense joy, as they truly are beautiful things. That is, until you get the bill! Ouch! 🙂
